Botox (clostridium botulinum) is a prescription medication made by Allergan which is injected into muscles and used to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in adults
When you squint or frown, the muscles between your eyebrows contract, causing the skin to furrow and fold. Over time, as your skin ages and loses some of its elasticity, these repeated contractions can cause permanent frown lines.
Botox acts on nerve endings in muscles to prevent muscle fibers from contracting. By reducing these contractions, BOTOX can temporarily reduce the lines between your eyebrows.
If you are an adult with moderate to severe glabellar lines, this treatment of injections may be right for you. Talk to our Doctor to discuss the benefits and risks of treatment.Do not take BOTOX if you are allergic to botulinum toxic or any other ingredients in BOTOX. You should also not take BOTOX if you have an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxic product or have a skin infection at the planned injection site.
Before receiving treatment with BOTOX, you should tell your Doctor about all the medical conditions, including whether you have a disease that affects your muscles and nerves, have allergies to any botulinum toxin product or have experienced any side effect from any other botulinum toxin in the past.
In addition, tell your Doctor about your medical history and all the medicines you take, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements.
Especially tell your Doctor if you have received any other botulinum toxin product in the last four months or in the past. Be sure your Doctor knows exactly which product(s) you received and when you received them.
Getting Botox takes only a few minutes and no anesthesia is required. Botox is injected with a fine needle into specific muscles with only minor discomfort. It generally takes seven to ten days to take full effect and it is best to avoid alcohol at least one week prior to treatment. Aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications should be stopped two weeks before treatment as well in order to reduce bruising.
The effects from Botox will last three to four months, sometimes more, sometimes less – each person is different. Also, depending on the time frame of retreating a specific area, results can vary as well as the number of units needed to obtain results. For first time clients, it is always best to schedule a 10 day follow up appointment to discuss any concerns or the addition of a few additional units until your “formula” is perfected. Everybody is unique.
As muscle action gradually returns, the lines and wrinkles begin to re-appear and will need to be re-treated. The lines and wrinkles often appear less severe with repeat treatments because the muscles are being trained to relax. Training the muscles is important so it is always best to receive Botox on a regular schedule before all of the effects of the previous Botox treatment wears off. Deep resting creases in the skin can only be softened and not total eliminated, this is why proper maintenance is crucial.
Temporary bruising is the most common side effect of Botox. There is also a risk of headaches but this as well is transient in nature, usually resolving within 2-3 days. A small percentage of patients may develop eyelid drooping or a dropping of the brow which are both temporary and usually resolve within weeks. To lessen any risks, an upright position should be maintained for 4 hours following the treatments and you should refrain from exercise until the following day as well as avoid any irritating products applied directly to the injection sites.
BOTOX is basically made from the botulinum toxin type A along with some additional proteins. The bacteria in botulinum toxin are the same bacteria that cause botulism, which sounds scary, but it’s not. Back in the 1950s research scientists discovered that when injected in very minute amounts into a muscle the botulinum toxin caused that muscle to temporarily stop contracting. It does this by blocking the nerve messages sent to the brain. By blocking the message, the brain never receives the signal to contract the muscle, so the muscle stays at rest.
This led directly to the development of BOTOX, which was originally approved by the FDA for treatment of involuntary eyelid spasms.
BOTOX is used on wrinkles and lines on the upper third of the face, the expressive area of the face. BOTOX is effective on crow’s feet at the outside of the eyes, the 11s between the eyebrows, and on forehead lines.
BOTOX doesn’t provide immediate results. It takes about four days for BOTOX to block the nerve messages and stop the muscle from contracting. From there, BOTOX erases wrinkles for up to six months. At that point, the body will begin to absorb the now-inert botulinum toxin and the targeted muscles will begin to contract again, re-forming the wrinkles.
BOTOX works on what are known as “dynamic wrinkles.” These wrinkles form on the upper third of the face when we make certain expressions, such as showing surprise, frowning, squinting, and the like. If you make one of those expressions, you can feel the muscles around the eyes, on the brows, and on the forehead engage. Over time, as our skin thins, these contractions begin to form wrinkles on the surface skin above the muscle. These are dynamic wrinkles. When injected into the muscle forming the wrinkle BOTOX erases the wrinkle by keeping the muscle from contracting.
Dermal fillers work entirely differently. They are injected beneath a wrinkle, crease, or area of volume loss and they simply “fill” in the space, pushing the depressed skin back upward. The most popular dermal fillers, Juvederm and Restylane, are made from hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in the skin and is responsible for plumping and hydrating the skin. Dermal fillers work on wrinkles caused by sun damage, declining collagen production, personal habits, and environmental factors. These are known as static wrinkles, and once the skin is damaged they show themselves at all times.
Dermal fillers have no effect on dynamic wrinkles, and BOTOX has no effect on static wrinkles.
Our experienced, medical doctor at Tranquil Waters use a very tiny needle to inject BOTOX. Plus, it is not injected to great depth. Most patients equate the feeling to that of a pinprick and they do not require topical numbing.
BOTOX was the original “lunchtime procedure.” It takes just 10-15 minutes for the injections, and you can go right back to work or other activities.
BOTOX is priced by the unit. How much BOTOX you will need and how many injections your session will include is completely dependent upon what areas you are having treated. Prior to your injections, once you tell us what you want to target, we can give you a good idea of how much you will need.
